The one man show

During the digging season for 2019 at full steam, I had the fortunate opportunity to visit Premier Landscape out of Portsmouth RI. The job that was in progress seemed relatively straightforward, install a gas tank, line, and in ground swimming pool. What was really surprising when I arrived, was that only one employee was on the site, Operator & Forman Tom. I expected others to show up, and they never did.

“I guess I’m something of a one man show” he laughed as he greased up his engcon EC209 mounted to a John Deere 75G. Once he started work it was easy to see why he was the only worker; the engcon made him so versatile he could complete tasks in the same amount of time it would take for a supervisor to explain what needed to be done.
“It’s pretty amazing how quickly and easily I can switch tools using the EC-oil. It’s a no brainer and helps me be efficient enough that I can get jobs done in a fraction of the time.” Tom told me while he was swapping back and forth between the grading bucket for backfilling and the plate compactor. He got almost the entire trench backfilled and compacted the short time I was there, and he also backfilled the gas tank.
About halfway through my visit, Gairad DeCastro the owner of the business stopped by to drop off supplies. I managed to ask a couple questions as to how the engcon is adjusting his business structure.

“We went all out, we got all the attachments in the catalog and spec’d the top tier setup and each job we arrive at using the engcon, and the efficiency gains are immediately noticeable and significant. I can send laborers to other sites and rely on only one piece of equipment. The clients are happier to see fewer machines in their backyard and because of the flexibility of the engcon the jobsites are neater and making our customers comfortable during these construction projects is a huge plus for the company.”

In my eyes one of the largest takeaways from the visit was Tom’s use of the EC-oil system. He made more than a dozen tool changes and all of them took less than 30 seconds to complete. He backfilled, compacted and kept moving down the trench at a speed you’d need to hire 3 laborers. The engcon system has made Tom a true jack of all trades, and a master of engcon.

“It’s pretty amazing how quickly and easily I can switch tools using the EC-oil. It’s a no brainer and helps me be efficient enough that I can get jobs done in a fraction of the time.”
