Steve Murphy’s

Plantworx show visit
tilted groundworks
specialist towards
Engcon

For Steve Murphy, owner of Surrey-based earthworks contractor, SMGC Ltd, a trip to the Plantworx 2019 show was just the catalyst he needed to add an Engcon EC214 tiltrotator and attachment package to his latest excavator purchase.

It was at the show, where Steve, who has spent 35 years in the industry, the last 10 as owner SMGC Ltd, got the opportunity to try out a tiltrotator on the Engcon stand for the first time. He made the decision there and then to inquire about putting
a package onto a brand new 15 tonne compact Takeuchi TB2150 he had on order.
When it came to the purchase, Steve was able to buy the whole setup from regional Takeuchi and Engcon dealer, CBL Plant’s Crawley branch. The team at CBL set up the machine, installing the new Engcon joysticks with DC2 tiltrotator controller, EC-Oil and the QSC system. This supports quick attachment changes for the four buckets used for
general works, trenching and loading, as well as the hydraulic compactor and forks the business also purchased.
Commenting on his decision to invest in the new Engcon and Takeuchi combination, Steve said: “As a small earthworks contractor, we tend to work on a lot of sites that are quite tight, busy and varied. For example, one minute we might be clearing the site,
the next we might be digging footings, or in the case of the site we are currently working on, supporting pilling operations.

“Having operated plant for over 35 years, I also know how difficult working on these sites can be. So, I always look at how my operators like Chris, who is operating the machine, can be kept safe and comfortable onsite, as well as being as productive
as possible. As a contractor we get paid by the job, not the hour, so if you can also do it quicker and even better, then you have both a happy client and a profitable job.”

Talking about the commercial impact of investing in the Engcon package, Steve added: “There are some really good finance deals around at the moment, so the investment is going to work out considerably in our favour, as we are also changing how we work.
For example, we no longer have to hire in a trench compactor and lift this into place each time. Now we can dig a trench, change over to the compactor attachment and finish it off in a fraction of the time.

“Before, we would hire in a compactor, get out of the cab to attach a lifting chain and placing it into the trenches. This would not only require the excavator to be out of action for this task, but it would also need another person to keep an eye on the compactor.

“For my operator Chris, who has been with the business for over 10 years, it has taken some getting used to, but already he loves it, particularly as he can change attachments without even leaving the cab. So in conclusion it was worth a visit to Plantworx and we are definitely reaping the benefits of using our new Engcon package now.”

"We are definitelyreaping the benefits ofusing our new Engconpackage"
