Customer driven Gary Stewart performs more jobs faster, thanks to Engcon

With a strong desire to own and operate an Engcon tiltrotator, owner of Stewart Plant Hire, Gary Stewart took the plunge in 2018. By offering a safer, more productive, faster operation, he considers it to be one of the best business decisions he’s made to keep his valued clients happy. Gary also enjoys reduced running costs on fuel and track maintenance due to significantly reduced tracking movements.

Gary comments; “My initial Engcon experience started just two years ago with a pre-owned 2004 EC15A tiltrotator unit which was reasonably priced. I asked John Craig, at JCC Engcon, to supply a quick coupling hitch and replace some pivot bushes and it’s
never let me down, as I’ve found it to be very robust and reliable.”

“Having the tiltrotator for only a few days, I quickly realised how much more productive I could be, and so did my customer. So much so, that they asked me to fit another one to my wheeled excavator and were willing to pay extra to help cover the investment
costs. This is because numerous tasks were being completed much quicker and more safely, with less ground workers in the vicinity of the machine.” With customer demand growing for Engcon equipped tiltrotators, Gary decided to buy two new Engcon tiltrotators with gripper attachments for extra versatility. This included an EC209 unit for my wheeled excavator and a bigger EC214 unit to fit on my 14 tonne high track excavator.”

Gary has quickly taken his tiltrotator experience with Engcon to the next level, as he now uses the 3D machine control system in his tracked excavator. The 3D machine control helps him to dig even the most complex of projects as it is integrated with the rotation sensors fitted in the Engcon tiltrotator. In comparison trials, with and without the use of Gary’s tiltrotator equipped machines, his client saw a reduction in fuel burn and therefore lower Co2 emissions. They also saw an improvement in dig plan compliance, resulting in less infill material required. This was further supported by much greater accuracy through the combination of the Engcon tiltrotator and the 3D
machine control. Gary comments; “The site engineers supply the 3D models on a USB stick, which just plugs into the Leica onboard tablet.

"It’s very easy to use and rewarding, as the site engineers trust us to do our jobs well which saves them time, as they don’t need to be constantly checking we are on-grade.”

Gary’s work can involve some lifting tasks around the site, which he uses the Engcon hitch lifting hook to support. He has also fitted the EC-Oil automatic quick hitch system, which connects the tiltrotator and compatible hydraulic tools. This means the operator doesn't have to leave the cab to change attachments, offering another time saving and safety benefit. With more inner-city earthworks being undertaken, Gary’s next investment will a hydraulic breaker and an Engcon compactor plate. Gary also finds Engcon’s new gripper cassette unit another extremely versatile tool, which is fitted to both his tiltrotators. Gary also likes the Engcon DC2 App, where he can make quick setup changes and adjustments to his tiltrotators on his tablet. We met Gary on a site in Glasgow, where a new pedestrian footbridge is being constructed. Gary added. “Part of the excavating work involved digging around a fibreoptic cable for the Motorway information board. Without the dexterity of the Engcon tiltrotator, that whole section would have needed to be dug by hand."

"Having used Engcon tiltrotators for two years, I would never go back to a conventional hitch and bucket system, and the sales and service experience I’ve enjoyed with Engcon is second to none.”

“Having the tiltrotator for only a few days, I quickly realised how much more productive I could be, andso did my customer. So much so, that they asked me to fit another one to my wheeled excavator andwere willing to pay extra to help cover the investment costs. This is because numerous tasks were beingcompleted much quicker and more safely, with lessground workers in the vicinity of the machine.”
