Keeping work on track

In December last year, the Emmaboda line – the southeast part of the coast-to-coast railway – was re-opened.

The upgrade had been longed for, and during the work, engcon’s tiltrotator proved to be an invaluable asset.

“engcon’s tiltrotator is a must as conditions are often cramped and space is limited,” Mats Gustafsson told us when Nordic news paid them a visit.

The coast-to-coast railway runs from Gothenburg to Kalmar and Karlskrona and has its roots in five different railways. An extensive upgrade of the 57-kilometre eastern section between Emmaboda and Karlskrona was begun in 2011.

Investments totalling SEK 1.4 million were made in such things as four new passing sidings were built; continuously welded rails for the entire stretch, new overhead contact wires, track straightening and better level crossing safety.

When we visited work was in full swing and Mats Gustafsson was busy with his rail-wheeled excavator clearing ditches and performing levelling work on cable ducts and embankments.

“The engcon tiltrotator is invaluable. Our tasks are varied, and the quick hitch means we can switch tools often and carry out many different assignments. This way we waste no time between all the changes,” said Mats, who has worked around 20 years with rail-wheeled excavators.

Useable grapple

A bit further down the track we met Jonas Olsson, who was working on embankments inside a station area.

“This would have been difficult work without the tiltrotator; it allows us to use all of our tools to the max. The integrated grab also makes the excavator even more versatile and practical,” says Jonas.

Johnny Hallberg of JH Entreprenad had several machines fitted with engcon tiltrotators at work on the project.

“engcon’s tiltrotators are extremely reliable, and their grab is the only one that can cope with railway contract work,” he declared, and continued "The railway environment is special and demands machines and tools that are robust and operationally reliable. That makes engcon a great choice.”
