“Ultra Gazelle” ready to take new leap

When the Gazelle of the Year award celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, the business daily Dagens Industri took the opportunity to put one person in the limelight: “Ultra Gazelle” Stig Engström, founder and owner of engcon. It’s easy to see why Stig was chosen – engcon was the first company to be named “Marathon Gazelle” and demonstrate sustainable growth for ten consecutive years.

engcon was a success story for many years. The annual nominations for Gazelle of the Year – a competition which rewards the fastest growing companies in Sweden – was a clear reflector of engcon’s success with the tiltrotator in the first decade of the 21st century.

“Some of that might be down to me, but it was mostly because we had the right product at the right time,” Stig Engström humbly told Dagens Industri.

Ready for a new leap

But the end of this first decade of the 21st century saw a bit of a glitch when the credit crunch swept the economies of the Western World. engcon’s expansion in Europe stopped short even though the company carried on investing in product development and delivered stable profitability. But after a certain amount of “cleaning up” within the company, the “gazelle” is once again ready to really take the leap out into Europe and North America.

He describes the market as infinite; each and every excavator owner in the world can make money with engcon’s brand-independent tiltrotator.
