We now have three engcon tiltrotators and couldn’t do without them!

NJC Yorkshire have been established since 2011 and have built up a reputation for cooperative working to deliver highquality civil engineering, groundworks and building projects for a variety of private and national concerns across North Yorkshire and the rest of the UK.

‘We regularly have a variety of different projects on to the go at any one time.’ Nathan comments. ‘This could be from groundworks around a private house or undertaking a full build project for a private developer, the range of works we see ourselves undertaking has developed as we have grown the business.’

The comprehensive range of services offered by the company has led them to invest heavily in a range of machinery and attachments designed not only to make life easier on site, but also to streamline their operations and increase productivity and accuracy. With a fleet of excavators ranging from 1.7 to 15 tonnes, the company has equipment capable of undertaking a variety of operations. It is their larger machines which have been given the engcon treatment to further increase their productivity and versatility.

NJC Yorkshire operate a pair of JCB 140XLC excavators as their frontline machines , both of which have been fitted with EC219 tiltrotators with EPS positioning allowing them to fully integrate with the Trimble Earthworks systems used to great effect on their projects. ‘It was a step into the unknown for us when we purchased our first engcon and Trimble system.’ Nathan commented. ‘We are so glad we have made the investment as we have found the Trimble system just offers us so much flexibility especially when working with the engcon. Once we have the models for each particular project, we are self-sufficient with only the need to cross check dimensions every so often. Having the engcons has also made a huge difference to the way we work and the way we are able to just do things more efficiently. You don’t realise just what can be achieved with a tiltrotator and a range of different attachments until you actually put them to work.’

We met up with Nathan and operator Ryan Wheeler on one of their latest projects on the outskirts of Thirsk where they are undertaking the construction of a series of single storey steel framed industrial units. With the strip foundations and bolt boxes already installed the team were busy stoning up inside the footings ready for concreting the slab as undertaking a range of other works including creating a hard standing area for vans and cabins during the build.

This project saw one of the first outings for the company’s latest engcon equipped acquisition, a 12 tonne Liebherr A910 Compact wheeled excavator. ‘We had a Mecalac wheeled excavator previously and looked at a variety of manufacturers before deciding on the Liebherr.’ Nathan commented. ‘We were offered a good deal on it and had the engcon fitted at Biggleswade before the entire package was delivered to us. It’s a great little machine and offers our customers something different from us. We originally planned to use the Liebherr for undertaking finishing works on one of the housing developments we have on the books but planning issues have held the developer up on this particular job. This means we have the machine’s availability for our other projects for which it will fill in nicely.’

The new arrival has taken the engcon count to three units, this time with a slightly smaller EC209. What is different about this tiltrotator is the addition of a removable gripper cassette adding to the excavator’s versatility. ‘It makes a big difference to what we can do on site.’ Nathan said. ‘Just picking up material, moving fence panels and anything we’d have to do by hand can be done with ease and safety with the gripper.’

The new arrival has been handed to 19-year-old Ryan Wheeler who has been operating excavators for a couple of years with NJC. ‘I’ve only had the Liebherr a couple of days so I’m still getting used to all of the controls.’ He commented. ‘It’s a great bit of kit and even with the two-piece boom straight out and the 750Kg of engcon on the end of it, still remains stable cross carriage.’

Like the other engcon tiltrotators in the fleet, the EC209 has been supplied with an ECOil top hitch allowing the tiltrotator to be dropped off should it be required. ‘It’s very rare the tiltrotator will come off but having the option to do it quickly, easily and safely makes it worth having.’ Nathan commented.

At Thirsk the first task was moving the large pile of stone into the footprint of the building. With Ryan on the Liebherr loading one of the company’s 9t capacity Wacker Neuson dumpers, the stone was quickly moved and tipped around Nathan who was piloting one of the JCB 140X excavators. With its Trimble Earthworks machine control set up and the engcon grading beam attached, Nathan quickly set about levelling the incoming stone out to a level. Even sitting on the slightly uneven sub-floor, the ability to compensate for any difference in angle or level of the base machine thanks to the engcon allowed Nathan to quickly and accurately spread out the material.

With the last of the material sent to the JCB, Ryan moved the Liebherr around the site completing the stoning up of the temporary car park before sealing off a pile of soil ahead of promised wet weather. ‘It has some off road ability for a duck.’ Ryan commented. ‘Once I was up on the pile, I hardly had to move the machine with the added reach of the two-piece boom and the engcon.’ With the pile sealed off Ryan moved the machine again to strip and level the ground between the foundations and the perimeter site fencing. With very little space in which to put the machine the ability to twist and tilt the Scandi-style bucket allowed him to complete the task with very little issue. The reduced tailswing of the excavator also came in handy as he was still able to rotate the machine with no risk of catching the counterweight on the fence panels.

‘Whilst our choice of new excavator could have been from any manufacturer.’ Nathan commented ‘It would have been fitted with an engcon. Over the years of running them we have encountered very little in the way of issues with them and those we have had, have been rectified very quickly by our local service partner Ross Stonehouse at NEPS. Going forward, future excavator purchases will probably have an engcon tiltrotator as it just makes sense to have the whole fleet working productively.’

« Once I was up on the pile, I hardly had to move the machine with the added reach of the two-piece boom and the engcon. »
