A successful health initiative by Engcon - Success for Team Engcon in this year's Vasaloppet races

With this year's edition of Vasaloppet's winter week now over, Engcon can confirm that Team Engcon’s efforts were successful. Almost 20 of the company’s employees took part in Vasaloppet's various races and for one of the team's elite skiers, para-athlete Zebastian Modin, it was a competition to remember. With Emil Jönsson, Jerry Ahrlin and Robin Bryntesson by his side, Zebastian finished Sunday's Vasaloppet race in 5 hours and 44 minutes.

Although both a lack of snow and mild weather were a worry for the organisers for much of the winter, the 96th running of Vasaloppet got under way. With the goal of creating a stronger company and increasing interest in exercise and health, all employees were given the opportunity to be sponsored by the company and ski the different races in the same colours as part of Team Engcon, the company's team in Vasaloppet for several years. By the end of the Vasaloppet week on Sunday, Engcon had been represented by almost 20 employees during the week's various races. Three teams (15 people) from Engcon took part in Friday's relay.

"For us, our employees are absolutely the most important thing we have and we depend on them thriving. As a company, we must have that insight and work on initiatives that enhance our employees’ well-being. Team Engcon is just such an initiative, and I am very impressed with everyone's efforts and hope it spurred more people into getting started. Next year it would be great to have even more employees on the start line," says Stig Engström, Engcon’s founder and owner, who on Sunday completed the final Vasaloppet event in a time of 7 hours and 3 minutes.

Team Engcon was represented this year not only by its own employees on the course but also by a long-distance team consisting of Norwegian cross-country skier Laila Kveli, Strömsund skier Magnus Näslund, Nils Persson and Zebastian Modin. With former top-class skiers such as Emil Jönsson, Jerry Ahrlin and Robin Bryntesson as escorts, Zebastian Modin, one of Sweden's most successful para-athletes with medals from both the Paralympics and the World Championships, skied his first Vasaloppet ever. And he did it in 5 hours and 44 minutes, a time he was quite happy with.

“I didn’t know quite what to expect because previously I had only competed in races of 42 km on roller skis and 40 km on cross-country skis. Given that, and with the bad conditions in mind, I'll have to say that I'm happy with my efforts," says Zebastian Modin.

Laila Kveli finished in a time of 5 hours and 53 minutes, Nils Persson in 4 hours and 28 minutes, and for Magnus Näslund the clock stopped at 4 hours and 43 minutes. Jerry Ahrlin, part of Team Engcon and one of Zebastian's escorts during the race, comments on the efforts of both the employees and Zebastian as follows:

"It's impressive how everyone took on this year's race. It was clearly a challenge considering how bad the conditions were, but despite that everyone skied with a smile on their face - more or less. I am very happy and proud to be a part of this team, and I think all the staff at Engcon, together with everyone in Team Engcon, should feel a little prouder today”.

The employer has a responsibility
For Engcon, investing in health is obvious, and Vasaloppet is a perfect way to demonstrate it. The goal is for Team Engcon to develop further and become a natural part of everyday life at the company.

"If we are to continue to stay ahead of our competitors and maintain our world-leading position, we must get everyone into motion, because we know that it makes a difference to performance at work. As an employer, we have a great responsibility for this. All employees are welcome to join this initiative, regardless of their fitness level and past experience. I both believe and hope that our investment in Team Engcon has generated interest in these issues and that more people will see the value of activities of this kind. Perhaps we have also inspired other companies to follow suit? That would be great," says Mikael Persson, Head of Human Resources at Engcon.
