The Swedish engineering company Engcon, the world’s leading tiltrotator manufacturer for excavators, continues to see a positive growth outlook. Key to Engcon’s global growth plans is the wellbeing of it’s staff. Which is why wellness and wellbeing have been an integral part of staff development for many years.
In 2019, Engcon tested a new approach to boosting wellbeing, by establishing a company ski team to motivate and encourage staff to exercise. In 2020, Engcon will be entering three teams in the Swedish relay ski event Stafettvasan on 28 February plus entrants for the Vasaloppet cross-country ski race on 1 March 2020, led by elite skier Zebastian Modin.
All Engcon employees have the opportunity to be sponsored, to wear Team Engcon colours and participate at Vasaloppet, a Swedish institution and the oldest cross-country ski race in the world. The goal is to create a stronger Engcon and show that anything is possible by taking an interest in exercise and through training.
Team Engcon 2020 contains a mix of both staff and elite skiers. In pole position is Zebastian Modin, one of Sweden's most successful para athletes with medals from both the Paralympics and the World Championships. He will be competing in Vasaloppet with Jerry Ahrlin, Emil Jönsson and Robin Bryntesson as escorts.
When ordinary non-elite athletes participate in Vasaloppet, it is mainly a matter of getting through the course, but for Zebastian who is super fit, there are other challenges.
"The biggest challenge is to keep focussed and to go fast for 90 km. I've never done Vasaloppet before, so I don't know what to expect. The longest distance I have competed so far is 42 km on roller skis or 20 km in cross-country skiing, so I’ll be standing right at the front with delight mingled with terror”, explains Zebastian Modin.
The preparations to cope with Vasaloppet have not only consisted of long races but much more ski-pole training than usual.
"I really appreciate the opportunity to compete for Team Engcon. It's fun to be part of a unique investment in both elite skiers and athletes, for both staff and those living in Strömsund. The fact that everyone is welcome and anything is possible. It suited me very well to try a long race, because there are no championships for me this year and I was eager to challenge myself by trying something new, and of course Vasaloppet is special”, says Zebastian.
Vasaloppet is an annual long distance cross-country ski race that is traditionally held on the first Sunday in March. The 90 km (56 miles) course runs from Berga By in Sälen to Mora in Dalarna, Sweden. From Team Engcon, three teams with skiers from the staff will take part in the relay event Stafettvasan and Zebastian Modin, Jerry Ahrlin, Laila Kveli, Magnus Näslund will compete in Vasaloppet itself.
