”Work smarter – not harder”
These wise words come from contractor Nils Smith, who runs Little Mule Equipment in Vermont, United States. Nils founded his company in the construction and infrastructure industry just over 15 years ago, and with 10 employees, he pretty soon began to think about how to get more efficient. He bought a backhoe loader and quickly cut down on the number of hands he previously had to employ.
“After a while with the backhoe I began to think about how to make excavation even more efficient, and it was then I discovered engcon tiltrotators,” says Nils when we pay him a visit in Vermont where he is busy leveling the land around a building under renovation.
Nils tells us he bought a 10-ton double-boomed excavator with an engcon tiltrotator and as he began to see how efficient the tiltrotators made everything, he replaced the rest of his personnel with his excavator, the engcon tiltrotator and a range of smart tools.
“I work on my own and like it because it’s simple and easy,” says Nils “I do driveway work, drainage work, land clearing, tree work, stone walls, septic projects, new foundations, and foundation repair work and a lot of trail building for a local Nordic ski area,” says Nils. Niels shows us how easily he can load the home-built trailer he’s hooked up to his Kubota KX080, before he drives off with the excavated material. Then he unhitches the bucket and connects hydraulic tree shears without having to leave the cab.
“I have an EC-Oil automatic oil connector on my quick coupler. It’s a fantastic product that makes my work so much easier as I change tools many times every day,” says Nils.
“Jumping in and out of the cab every time to connect hoses would be far too strenuous,” continues Nils. It doesn’t take Nils long to cut down three trees on the edge of the plot and load them onto his trailer. When he’s finished cutting, he disconnects the tree shears and connects a timber grab without leaving the cab. He unloads the trailer and unhitches the timber grab and the trailer before connecting a grading bucket. He quickly and skillfully spreads shingle alongside the building wall. Thanks to the tiltrotator, the material ends up exactly where it should and no spade work is necessary to trim the final surface layer – Nils does this with his excavator. The workday is drawing to a close, and the last thing Nils does is to connect a pallet fork to his machine. The tiltrotator allows him to reach under a stack of wood, turn it through 90 degrees and lift it to the second floor of the building.
